I think this means divestment is working!

yes, indeed. actually, i think we have CNN international to thank, because they interviewed this same guy when doing the divestment story a few weeks ago. i hope you guys had a chance to see it, they cut straight from this guy from the sudanese mission saying “what we need is investment not divestment” to joseph stiglitz saying “all of the oil profits are going straight to the military and not to the people.” it was priceless.
That’s pretty cool. It’s good to have a Nobel Prize-winner on your side. Make sure that Stiglitz’s message gets out to counter the Sudanese government’s disinformation.
I know on a lot of international issues I’ve never really sure whether more economic involvement or less economic involvement is the better course of action to effect change. Finding out whether the money is going into the hands of the people or into the hands of the government is a pretty good metric to figure out which way to go.
hey, this is unrelated to this post but i’m looking for something online about catholic worker house charities in my area. i know there is a house in santa ana, ca – i’ve been there and donated food. i want something online so i can promote it on my blog.

This report of Isaiah House, Santa Ana might suit you. Also see the Houses of Hospitality category and the links under “Catholic Worker blogs” in the sidebar.
Brenna,
Divestment is definitely working! Harvard turned into Stanford which avalanched into UC divestment and just recently CalSTRS and Maine divested. The movement is starting to bring significant pressure upon the Sudanese government.
Having said that, divestment is part of a broader strategy to end the suffering in Darfur. On April 30th, thousands of activists from across the West Coast will show the depth and power of the anti-genocide movement in San Francisco at the Day of Conscience for Darfur (www.ourpledge.org). If you’ve ever thought of doing anything to help the people of Darfur, now is the time to take a stand. Please join us in San Francisco on the 30th and register now at http://www.ourpledge.org.
Thanks for all the great working blogging on Darfur and let’s keep the pressure up until the genocide ends.
Ben
