Nick Nassar will be giving a talk on “Copyright & Culture” June 8, 7:30pm, at 52 Mason St, Worcester, Massachusetts.
He’ll look at the ethics of copyright, and how current trends in copyright law hurt individual freedom and society.
This talk is free and open to the public. Spirited discussion and refreshments will follow. Sponsored by the Saints Francis & Therese Catholic Worker community.
Nick is the lead developer for the free, open-source Democracy video player, a project of the non-profit Participatory Culture Foundation.
Crouse vs. Robertson: Tom “Mr. Hetero” Crouse has accused Pat Robertson of “making Christians look like fools” and being a “publicity addicted person.” Coming from Mr. Crouse, who’s no slouch himself, this is high praise.
Pat Robertson flashes the devil horns.

Sen. Kerry joins Republicans supporting border wall: But Senator Kennedy voted against it. Via TPM, the New York Times reports that “Bush Turns to Big Military Contractors for Border Control”:
Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, three of the largest, are among the companies that said they would submit bids within two weeks for a multibillion-dollar federal contract to build what the administration calls a “virtual fence” along the nation’s land borders.
Street art: Here are a couple murals from Mason St in Worcester. See Indymedia or my Flickr account for more.
That border fence is a joke… do they honestly think that’s going to keep people out? “Man, here I was, all ready to use my fake social security card to work in the U.S. after trudging for miles through the desert and meeting up with a shady coyote, but gosh darn it, they put up barbed wire. I guess I’m going back to Oaxaca to plow my unprofitable crops.”
Maybe after that copyright discussion there can be a podcast about the Sony rootkit and hand-crocheted Katamari Damacy (the most completely mind-blowingly awesome game in the history of the universe) pillows.
Well, there’s already been a request to post a recording online.
BTW, it’s technically a copyfight discussion.
Regarding the “fence”: A few weeks ago, someone from my church gave a talk on his trip to Israel and the occupied Palestine territories. His description of the exit interviews reminded me of having to deal with the special registration during my recent trips to the USA. The photographs of the separation fence and the ratrun at the border crossings reminded me of the Tijuana–San Diego border.
John Robb comments on the border situation:
My impression is that the intended effect of the pro-immigration protests was to scare politicians and organize unorganized immigrants. The second goal is on its way to being accomplished; unintended side effects may have undermined the first goal. I’m still hopeful.
