508 is a show about Worcester. This week’s guest is City Council and Mayoral candidate Bill Coleman. Near the end of the show, we also talk about Occupy Worcester and Occupy Boston.
(The Internet Archive is doing maintenance this weekend–downloads will be posted when that site is back up.)
You can watch 508 Fridays at 7pm on WCCA TV13.
Regarding Occupy in general — I really don’t understand it.
I’ve been registered as a third party voter for 14 years. (That is as many years as I’ve been able to vote.) I do not vote for many major-party candidates. I will always vote “None of the Above” if I don’t like my choices.
I’ve been a credit union member for at least 12 years. My stock investments are, where possible, made with a company that uses its shareholder voice to make positive social changes in the companies it invests in.
I’ve heard a lot about how people are fed up with the two party system. Good for them. Where the hell have they been for the past decades and why haven’t they voted their conscience?
If you’re fed up with Wall Street, or banks getting bailouts, or whatever, then TAKE YOUR MONEY out of them and put it in savings banks, credit unions, and/or invest your money in a socially responsible index fund.
Camping out in the middle of a city, while sexy in a certain nouveau-hippie way, doesn’t get as much done as voting with your feet, your wallet, and your investment portfolio.
By all means, protest. But don’t pretend that folks who are walking the walk every day — voting against the two-party monopoly, putting their money in local banks, resisting buying the latest & greatest — aren’t doing more activism than folks who have the time to sit in a park and do mike checks.
