508 is a show about Worcester. This week’s panel is Tina Zlody, Jacob Berendes, Jeff Barnard, Brendan Melican, and Bruce “Snow Ghost” Russell.

Tina finished a triathlon; Jacob went to the George Street Challenge.

Start on the Street is coming up; so is a Cosby Show project at HBML.

Councilor Germain has been feuding with the police chief.

Mike had two bar experiences, one in which a guy got stabbed, the other in which a city councilor did not sing Johnny Cash.

Missoula Oblongata brought their play “Last Hurrah of the Clementines” to Worcester.

We talk about CVS blight and the giant who lives in the downtown AT&T building.

Jacob says the name of Webster Lake.

508 #45: Art heist

508 is a show about Worcester. This week’s panel includes Brendan Melican, Bruce Russell, and Kevin Ksen.

The Worcester police want $4K before sending records about Officer Mark Rojas to the Telegram & Gazette. Also this week: “At least six city police officers are under investigation for fraudulently claiming overtime pay for time spent testifying in court cases.”

There was an art heist in Elm Park.

Some good things in Worcester: the American Antiquarian Society, the Latin Festival, the Worcester World Cup, the Dive Bar’s new patio, and Jeff Barnard’s recovery.

Worcester Magazine had a nice article on street vendors this week. We finish the show with some audio interviews with vendors.

Choice snippet of the proposed vendor regulations:

For purposes of this provision a threat shall include the assemblage of any number of people in the traveled portion of any public or private way within three hundred feet of the vendor, peddler or merchant.

After a short attempt to remain a parks commissioner, Bruce Wahle has stepped down. The auto event called the Summer Nationals is in Worcester this weekend; lots of blogging by Jeff, and a great interview with the founder in Worcester Magazine.

Tom Lewis’s retrospective art show has opened. The head of AIDS Project Worcester wrote a strong rebuttal to a letter by Barbara Haller and Billy Breault. The T&G had a nice photo of the fireworks; many more on Flickr. The whole Charter/NebuAd/customer betrayal thing is unravelling; kudos to WoMag for covering it, and fie on the T&G for ignoring it. Security Now has a two part podcast explaining the technology and issues involved in this sort of thing.

Mike talks about the Catholic Worker gathering and rosary trial update, already blogged here. Central Street is still not named after MLK. A local was busted for buying fake drugs. People like real drugs. (We talk about drug legalization in Massachusetts at length.) Mike reads some Jordan Levy headlines.

The City Council will discuss street vendors again on Tuesday, and likely vote on whether to restrict their activities. If you support vendors, it’s not a waste of time to contact your councilor, because they’re still divided on the issue.

The Union Station garage isn’t open; some of the vacancies there will be filled. There is cool art in Elm Park.

508 #40: Bad Sound Quality

508 is a show about Worcester. This week’s conversation is one of the best ever, but due to sound problems is almost unintelligible. Panelists are Brendan Melican, Jeff Barnard, Cha-Cha Connor, Kevin Ksen, and Dave Maciewski.

[display_podcast]

Topics include bears, Billy Breault, Barbara Haller, Counselor Palpatine, NebuAd, Tim Heard’s final blog post, “Q”, the Q, Mike’s pre-trial hearing, and lots of talk about hot dog vendors.

508 #39: Power failure

508 is a show about Worcester. Unsteady electricity from a storm earlier this week threatens to derail, then does derail, the show. Brendan Melican and Cha-Cha Connor appear briefly. Mostly it’s Bruce Russell.

[display_podcast]

There was a big storm in Worcester. Cha-Cha went to New England’s first trans pride march. Mike reads the InCity Times: both unconvincing arguments against a shelter at 62 Elm St, and Rosalie Tirella channeling Jean Teasdale on “Sex and the City.”

Watch out for the latest WordPress hacks; they got the Worcester Republican blog, they could get you too. Mike’s pre-trial hearing is Monday. The Toxic Soil Busters debuted a short film about their project last night. It’s Bruce’s birthday; call the hotline if you want to leave a birthday greeting to be played on the show.

Note: the Charter ads have returned in this week’s Worcester Magazine.

Extra note: this is the greatest Worcester blog post in history.

508 #38: The renegade blogger

508 is a show about Worcester. This week’s panel includes Brendan Melican, Scott Zoback, and Jeff Barnard.

[display_podcast]

We start by interviewing renegade blogger Marc Reece. John Wood and Karon Shea, if you want to give your side of the story you can contact us at pieandcoffee@gmail.com or leave a message at 508-471-3897. (Other listeners can drunk dial this number.)

Mike’s federal trial date is now up in the air; there’s a pre-trial hearing June 16. The Telegram & Gazette lost several reporters this week. (See Scott McLennan’s farewell column.) Charter ran no advertising in Worcester Magazine the week after WoMag ran an article critical of them; Scott Zoback comments. (John has fun trying to find someone at Charter who knows about their web monitoring plan.)

Taxi fares are going up. People are complaining about a proposed shelter on Elm Street. Jordan Levy’s blog is still kinda lame. The Grecian Festival should be awesome.

508 #37: Sitting on a couch

508 is a show about Worcester. This week, I sat on a couch with Brendan Melican and Jeff Barnard and talked about the city. Here’s a photo of us.

Relevant links: The Catholic Free Press ran a better story about the Planned Parenthood hearing than the T&G; the T&G moderates comments in odd ways; Start On The Park is a great arts event Sunday 11am-4pm in Beaver Brook Park; Claire Schaeffer-Duffy was found guilty for her Gitmo protest; Mike’s federal trial is in a couple weeks, please come out and support him; last night we rejected Worcester’s lame marketing slogans at the Dive Bar. (And Kate Toomey bought Mike a beer!)

People at the Dive Bar representing Worcesterite, I Heart Peanut Butter, 4-rilla, Daily Worcesteria, Wormtown Taxi, and Pie and Coffee.

Also: Worcester Magazine wrote about Charter’s web monitoring plans, despite Charter being one of their biggest advertisers; Bruce Russell has been entered into the “We Got the Beat” casting call; the InCity Times celebrate’s Godwin’s Law; the diocese should make better use of its young Catholics; Mike’s new favorite blog is Cascading Waters.

Note: Brendan recommends this Ted talk on letting your kids do “dangerous” things; Mike name-drops Ted speaker Paul Rothemund.

And: You can sign up to be a poll worker, and we plan to interview renegade blogger Marc Reese.

Plus: We’re really mad about that kid who got suspended for having a bullet casing.
